Having typified the hard rock scene for an entire generation, Deep Purple is currently one of most popular bands in the world. Born as Cordozar Calvin Broadus in 1971, he got his nickname when his mother named him “Snoopy” because he loved the cartoon Peanuts. Snoop has had several encounters with the law after leaving high school, starting with being arrested for the possession of cocaine. Snoop would end up spending several stints in jail but finally managed to get out of this crime spiral and concentrate on music.

It was his collaboration with Dr. Dre on the theme song for the film Deep Cover and on Dr. Dre’s first solo album ”The Chronic” that introduced Snoop to the hip hop scene. Even before Snoop released his debut album “Doggystyle” in 1993 he was immensely popular. When “Doggystyle” released, his lyrics, drawling delivery, and arrest for the murder of Phillip Woldermarian all caused it to list directly in the number one position, creating a record as the first debut album to do so.

“Doggystyle” with hit singles such as “What’s My Name?” and “Gin & Juice” made him popular but his arrest and subsequent trial for murder saw him not releasing any other records for several years.

After the murder trial ended with him being acquitted, Snoop released “The Dogfather” in 1996. However, by this time Gangsta Rap was no longer popular and the album received mix reviews. The death of 2PAC and the departure of Dre from Death Row would also lead to sales falling.

The following years saw Snoop clean up his image and move away from gansta rap. He also left Death Row Records and signed up with Master P’s No Limit Records, where he released albums such as “No Limit Top Dogg”.

Better known as Nelly, this African American rapper has proven time and again that he can be a savvy businessman as well as a Grammy winning artist. Born as Cornell Haynes Jr. in 1974, Nelly was a typical Air Force kid moving around as his dad got posted all over the globe.

After settling in St. Louis Nelly concentrated on sports and in particular baseball. Baseball helped him keep away from the streets and gangs which by the time had its hooks in him. Nelly excelled at baseball but at the same time decided to spend time forming a rap group the St. Lunatics. They went to record “Gimmie What Ya Want” which became a wildly popular local hit.

However, since they could not land a record deal they proposed that Nelly find a deal of his own. This lead to Nelly signing with Universal Records and releasing his debut album titled “Country Grammar”. The title song would go on to become a smash hit and debut at the number three position on the Billboard 200.

As he was building his career as a rap artist Nelly collaborated with his cousin Yomi Martin to launch a clothing line which they ended up christening Vokal. Vokal started off with T-shirts featuring the St. Lunatics which were then sold from car trunks for $20 per piece. Vokal has since then morphed into multi million dollar business literally growing along with Nelly’s fame.

Enrique not satisfied with his status as a Latin heartthrob, went on to successfully crossover to the English music industry with the number one hit “Bailamos”. After the success of “Bailamos”, Enrique signed a lucrative deal with Interscope and subsequently released his first English album Enrique. The album “Enrique” had some Latin influence, and the duet “Could I Have This Kiss Forever” which he performed with Whitney Houston.

A significant part of the band Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen helped define the band’s sound with his electrifying guitar playing. He was and still is the glue that binds the band together.

Eddie was born in 1955 and moved to Pasadena, California in 1962. In Pasadena Eddie Van Halen and his brother set about learning how to play various instruments such as the piano, drums and guitar. Finally Alex took up playing the drums while Eddie perfected playing on his guitar. This would eventually lead to them forming the band “Van Halen” in 1972.

At the time of its formation the band consisted of Eddie on guitar, Alex on drums and Mark Stone on bass. As Eddie disliked singing the lead vocals for their songs they decided to recruit David Lee Roth, and Michael Anthony to replace Mark Stone.

Van Halen’s first breakthrough came when they were spotted by Gene Simmons of the band Kiss. He financed their first demo tape which resulted in Van Halen signing a recording contract with Warner Bros Records. Van Halen released their first album titled “Van Halen” in 1978 and announced their arrival in the world of rock and roll.With hits such as “Jamie’s crying” and “Runnin with the Devil” the album would go platinum in its first year.

As with most rock banks, several financially successful albums did not translate into a smooth working relationship. The band almost split before Gene Simmons stepped in and persuaded Eddie to stay on. Soon after this the band released their highly successful album “1984” which rose to second position on the billboard charts and brought them their first number one hit “Jump”.

Riddled with tension among band members the band could not stay together as a cohesive unit and split. In addition Eddie’s tumultuous relationship with Roth even resulted in Roth leaving and rejoining the band on two occasions.

While Van Halen reunited in 2004, their plans for a tour in 2007 were postponed as Eddie was admitted to rehab. Eddie Van Halen has proven that when it comes to being strikingly different he rules the roost, even refusing to give up cigarettes after he was diagnosed with oral cancer on two occasions.

Lil Wayne right now is one of the most popular rap artists in the United States and probably the world. With his latest album Tha Carter III selling 1,005,545 copies within a week of its release, he has popularity and a lot more on his side.

Born in 1982 and raised in Hollygrove a neighborhood of New Orleans made famous by its soul singers, Lil Wayne signed his first record deal at the age of eleven. He dropped out of school when he was 14 years old and released his debut solo album “Tha Block Is Hot” at sixteen. His next albums “Lights Out” and “500 Degreez” achieved gold status but didn’t exactly get the cash registers ringing. However, the release of “Tha Carter” in 2004 turned out to be a turning point as it showcased his maturity, style and his signature dreadlocks. The second installment of Tha Carter named “Tha Carter II” was another success, with the album coming in at number two on the Billboard charts. The single from the album “Fireman” also broke into the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

After releasing “Tha Carter II” Lil Wayne showed up as a featured performer in several singles one among them being the popular remix of “Tell Me”. The year 2007 did not see the release of any of Lil Wayne’s albums but it did see him produce and distribute around 77 mixtapes for almost anyone who wanted them.

2008 wasn’t bad for him either, because in June when “Tha Carter III” was released it didn’t languish in stores but sold two million copies in nine weeks. Featuring spectacular wordplay “Tha Carter III” did a lot to back up his claims that he was “the best rapper alive”.

While he stands out from other rap artists on the basis of his incredible talent and resourcefulness, Lil Wayne is still very much like them. His encounters with the law have seen him being arrested for the possession of a pistol, cocaine and marijuana. A believer in hard work, Lil Wayne is currently working on Carter IV and in his own words feels that “he is in his prime, getting older but only getting better”.
